Random Stories

I played football with some guys last weekend...actually I should say I was humbled while running around on a football field with some other guys. I am an American who cannot play football, and it was clear that night. I just can't do anything with my feet. After the match I told a guy he played well, and he looked at me a minute and said "Well...you ran well." I guess I've got something going for me...

Another old roommate got engaged last week. The current count is up to 6...

Last Friday, I did two things I couldn't do 8 months ago. I drove a couple of volunteers to meet a local guy using a stick shift, and then translated the conversation. And yes, I was quite proud of myself.

Other than that, I've gone to school and spent time with the people here.

A Game and Another Good Conversation

A couple of weeks ago I was hanging out with some guys in a cafe. They were playing a tile game called "okey", and it took me a while to get the hang of it. Guys were passing tiles and arranging them on their little boards, and every now and then they would lay their tiles down on the table. I halfway figured the game out, but it wasn't that great of a game.

Anyway, some of the guys kept playing while I bowed out. Then another guy came in the cafe who they knew. With the okey table full, we just sat around and talked for a while. The conversation turned to religion, and we talked about the gospel for a good hour and a half. He asked the same question in probably 15 different ways: "What if a guy is really good and does only one sin?" "What if a guy does great things but doesn't believe in Jesus?" At the end of the night, he said the gospel just wasn't his religion. But, he heard truth.

Another Day in the Life

I was in reading comprehension class one day last week when the teacher got on the subject of global warming. She talked for 20 minutes or so on how the problem is worsening, and how a lot of countries got together a while back and made an agreement, but that countries couldn't solve global warming. Only ordinary people can solve the problem. Then she turned the classroom lights off to fight said global warming, and we did the rest of the lesson in the dark. She hasn't let anyone turn the lights on since.

Maybe Louisiana Isn't That Bad

Last week a group from Louisiana came over to help out, and I was a little wary. I had never met anyone from LA, and you never know about some of these states. But, these guys turned out to be good, and they did a lot of good work. Plus, I got to skip class for a week.

Some highlights:

We were playing baseball at the orphanage, I'm not sure why that one guy is kicking. Apparently, I didn't explain the game as well as I thought.

No trip would be complete without a pilgrimage or two...

My favorite part? We went on campus one day and ended up going to a class and meeting like 15 people. Later we went back and we were able to give out a bunch of New Testaments.

My least favorite part? Getting stuck in an elevator. Suffice it to say, when an elevator says it's for 3 people, don't try to squeeze in 5.
